There is a reason you were drawn here.
Maybe it was a whisper, a friend’s invitation to a cacao circle, a reel that made your heart beat a little faster, or an inexplicable craving for something deeper than your morning coffee. Whatever brought you, Ix’Cacao, the spirit of this sacred plant medicine ~ has a way of calling her people in.
Cacao has been used ceremonially for more than 2,000 years, originally by the Mayan people of Central and South America, who understood that this medicine opens the heart, connects us to the divine, and helps us hear the wisdom that lives within. What you’re about to learn is not just a recipe. It’s a remembering.
These three ceremonial cacao recipes come from the teachings I received during my own initiation, training with a cacao priestess in Bali, and studying under a Mayan shaman in Guatemala. Each one is designed to be made with intention, drunk with reverence, and used as a portal back to yourself.
Before You Begin: A Note on Ceremonial Cacao
Not all cacao is created equal, and it matters deeply which cacao you use in your rituals.
True ceremonial-grade cacao is minimally processed. The beans are harvested by hand, fermented, sun-dried, and gently ground, nothing more. No added sugars, no chemicals, no industrial machinery. The spirit of Ix’Cacao is preserved in every block.
When you hold ceremonial cacao in your hands, you’re holding something that was grown, harvested, and processed with prayer and gratitude. The trees are blessed. Offerings are placed at their roots. That energy is in your cup.
This is not hot chocolate. This is medicine.
Recipe 1: The Traditional Mayan Preparation
For connecting to lineage, grounding your energy, and beginning a ceremony or deep practice.
Ingredients: 1.5 oz ceremonial cacao (finely chopped), 8 oz filtered water or water + full-fat coconut milk, a pinch of cayenne, a pinch of sea salt, optional: raw honey
Method: Warm your liquid over low heat until steaming. Add cacao and whisk until dissolved. Add cayenne and salt. Taste — add honey only if needed. Pour into your ceremony cup, hold in both hands, and speak your intention before drinking.
Energetic note: Ideal for meditation, journaling, shadow work, or any practice where you want to hear your own inner wisdom clearly.
Recipe 2: The Heart-Opening Morning Blend
For beginning your day with softness, self-love, and heart connection.
Ingredients: 1 oz ceremonial cacao, 6 oz full-fat coconut milk, 2 oz hot water, 1 tsp raw honey or maple syrup, ¼ tsp vanilla, ½ tsp dried rose petals or rose water, a pinch of cinnamon, a pinch of sea salt
Method: Warm coconut milk and water together. Add cacao and whisk smooth. Stir in honey, vanilla, rose, cinnamon, and salt. Froth gently. Pour into your favorite mug, hold over your heart, breathe, and say something loving to yourself before the first sip.
Energetic note: Rose is the flower of the heart chakra. This blend is a powerful ally for self-love and beginning the day with tenderness instead of urgency.
Recipe 3: The Moon Medicine Cacao
For new moon intentions, full moon release, and any evening ritual.
Ingredients: 1 oz ceremonial cacao, 8 oz oat or almond milk, 1 tsp honey or date syrup, ½ tsp reishi or lion’s mane (optional), ½ tsp ashwagandha (optional), ¼ tsp cardamom, a pinch of cinnamon, a pinch of sea salt
Method: Warm your milk. Add cacao and whisk until dissolved. Add adaptogens, spices, salt, and honey. Whisk smooth. Pour, light a candle, pull an oracle card, and let this cup be your companion as you write intentions or release what no longer serves you.
Energetic note: This is slow, quiet medicine. Give yourself at least 30 minutes with this cup.
The Secret Ingredient: Intention
In the Mayan tradition, cacao isn’t simply consumed, it’s communed with. Before every cup: close your eyes and take three deep breaths, hold your cup in both hands and feel its warmth, speak your intention aloud, and give thanks to Ix’Cacao and the farmers who grew this medicine.
This small act of reverence changes everything. It shifts your cup from a drink into a doorway.
